I put my green bin out today then started weeding the garden, half an hour later the bin wagon came down our street and reached our house, while I was kneeling on the lawn weeding ,the bin man ran up my drive ,scooped up a big pile of weeds I had thrown on the drive , put them in my bin and then emptied the bin.
He then brought the bin back and laid it down with the open end facing me so I could easily throw my weeds in then he raced off to empty some more bins.

Nice to see a mention of me in the Lib Dems Kew Ward News literature, however; I think its time to prove these two parties wrong that I can win in Kew Ward irrespective of the party that I am standing for.

If you want change in Southport and Kew Ward vote for Owen Phillips on the 2nd May and we'll show these two parties who the real winner is. 🗳💬📝

# **[International delights come to Bootle for Salt and Tar’s official opening](www.qlocal.co.uk/southport/news_list/International_delights_come_to_Bootle_for_Salt_and_Tar%E2%80...

A colourful celebration of global culture will light up Bootle on Saturday 27th April as Salt and Tar officially opens to the public.

The canalside venue, which hosted resoundingly successful test events last year, has a packed weekend planned from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th April as it kicks off a bumper 2024 schedule.

Among the highlights is the Bootle International Festival, which will feature worldwide cuisine, entertainment and music. The diverse showing has been put together by more than 15 local community groups.

Guests will be treated to an array of food options over the weekend, ranging from local favourites to international delights. Vendors include speciality Thai street food from Big Kahuna and The Bus Yard.

Bollywood dancing, Congolese music and public workshops put on by the Ukrainian Welcome Centre also feature in the Saturday festivities.

The festival looks to build on the success of last year’s Eurovision celebration, which saw community acts and more than 50 performers from the Ukrainian Welcome Centre take over Bootle Strand.

It is just one of the events planned by the Sefton Performers Network over the next year to celebrate diversity in Sefton. The network is a partnership between Sefton CVS, In Another Place, Collective Encounters and MYA Space, and brings together community arts groups across the Borough.

Stephen Watson, Sefton Council’s Executive Director for Place said:

“Salt and Tar has already proved itself to be a popular and successful venue over the past two years. We’ve had the likes of Red Rum Club and Jason Byrne take to the stage at the heart of Bootle and help to put this fantastic emerging venue on the map.

“The official launch is another step in our ambitious journey for the area and will showcase the best Salt and Tar has to offer.

“As well as live music and entertainment, community events such as the Bootle International Festival are hugely important to us. We want to give residents the space and opportunity to share their creativity and skills. Next Saturday’s festival is just the beginning and I highly recommend coming down over the weekend to get a flavour of what’s to come.”

Maggi Aslet, Group Development Officer for Sefton CVS said:

“I have worked in Sefton for almost six years now, supporting community development and it is a real privilege to help co-ordinate this event.

“As a Borough, we are very lucky to have so many diverse, dynamic and talented community organisations, and it’s been incredibly enjoyable bringing them all together for the Bootle International Festival.

“I hope as many people as possible can join us on the day and help us celebrate our fantastic world in Bootle.”

Annie Spiers, Creative Director for In Another Place theatre company said:

“We are so excited to be leading Bootle’s first International Festival with Sefton Performers Network.

“We have been based in Bootle Strand for the last five years as resident community theatre company. We have loved seeing the increased ethnic diversity locally, even in that short timescale.

“With so many nationalities taking part on the Saturday, it will be a feast of song, dance, workshops and culture.

“We often expect to travel to other countries to experience such a wealth of creativity, but we are privileged to have everything from Ukrainian dance and song to Bollywood fitness, African drumming, and exotic cuisine on our doorstep in this free festival on the new Salt and Tar event space. We hope everyone will be curious enough to come and take a look.”

Salt and Tar’s official launch is on Friday 26th April. A surprise guest will help to mark the special event on the Friday with an intimate performance for all attendees, alongside local music and a variety of food options. Bootle’s own Lock and Quay will feature heavily across the weekend with a pop-up version of their community pub.

Sunday will see the talent from Bootle and beyond invited to the stage as part of Salt and Tar’s Live Lounge. Artists will have the opportunity to share their music with the public in the same venue as local legends Red Rum Club last year and Tom Jones, who will perform later this year.

The Bootle International Festival will run from 12-9pm on Saturday 27th April. Salt and Tar’s official launch will be help on Friday 26th April from 4-9pm, with additional celebrations on Sunday 28th from 12-6pm.

Every event across the launch weekend will be open to everyone and entry is free. Salt and Tar is fully family and dog friendly.

# **[Anyone for Tennis? Vist North Meols Lawn Tennis Club's Open Day this Saturday](www.qlocal.co.uk/southport/news_list/Anyone_for_Tennis__Vist_North_Meols_Lawn_Tennis_Club%27s_Ope...

North Meols Lawn Tennis Club, which is situated in Mill Lane Crescent, Churchtown PR9 7PF is hosting an Open Day this Saturday 27th April from 10am to 2pm.

Everyone is welcome, from those who have never played tennis before to experienced club players – and of course any budding future stars.. The event is free and is run in conjunction with the Lawn Tennis Association. The Open Sessions offer fun for all the family – including those who fancy trying the game for the first time.

The club coach, Danny McShane, will be on hand with coaching, advice and tips, as well as organising fun competitions with some great prizes. Tennis rackets will be available to borrow and refreshments will be available throughout the session.

Please park considerately so as not to block the crescent for emergency vehicles.

The sessions are open to everyone, whatever your level of experience or ability.

Judith Heaton, Club Chairman, said “Spring is here so time to get tennis motivated! Come along, bring the family and give tennis a try – it might be the start of something big!”

North Meols is one of the area’s leading tennis clubs, with eight all-weather courts, floodlighting and a purpose-built clubhouse. Social and competitive tennis is played all year round and there is a lively social programme for players and non-players alike. Further details about the club can be found at [www.north-meols-ltc.co.uk](www.north-meols-ltc.co.uk/).

**Good work by Merseyside Road Policing - A Double **

The chameleon tinted windscreen, heavily tinted front windows & tinted/ misrepresented reg plate drew our attention to this BMW. Vehicle prohibited as side windows only transmitted 16% light & windscreen 56% which is far lower than required!

Remember the BMW we seized this morning…The recovery truck that came to collect it happened to drive past us this afternoon, complete with BMW on board. Lo and behold, it was overweight and in poor condition. Vehicle prohibited until load removed and more TOR’s issued.

We recovered the car using one of our agents. But the owner then recovered it from the garage using the pictured recovery truck which was over weight. This is not one of our agents!

Blundell's Lane saved!

Sorry, not from adjacent and inappropriate development but just a small victory in at least saving the name of this ancient lane.

All locals will know the lane, which leads off Bankfield Lane and out onto Churchtown moss, as "Blundell's Lane". Indeed it has always been Blundell's Lane as evidenced by old deeds, leases, the Tithe Map, the earliest and subsequent Ordnance Survey and local town maps, local street directories and modern Land Registry records.

However, sometime in the past 5 years or so, a careless mistake by an unknown Sefton employee resulted in the dropping of the 's' and, because local authorities hold and maintain the master file of all street and other names in their areas, the OS, Google Maps, the publishers of the well-known A-Z maps, Estate Agents, Arriva Buses etc all followed suit and switched to the new spelling.

I appreciate some will say 'so what' but as so many of the original North Meols lane names, and even the tracks themselves, were deliberately swept away during the building of Southport, that I thought it worthwhile to at least keep the original name of one of the survivors.

Following discussions with the Ordnance Survey and Sefton's street name team, the 's' is to be reinstated and should now gradually find its way into all the online sources.

We have many music teachers in Southport but Jack Rogers, the lap dog of Blake Maynard, continues to promote one in Burscough at the group passing off on our respected name. Why does he? It’s a continued dig at our Claire Kelly who run Southport Piano & Music Academy, with many local teachers and hundreds of students locally. Jack who lives in Norfolk and to our knowledge has never been to Southport continues these vindictive posts, just like the demands and threats Maynard made to Claire when she left his group previously known as Friends of Southport.

# **[An influx of kittens at Woodlands Animal Sanctuary](www.qlocal.co.uk/southport/news_list/An_influx_of_kittens_at_Woodlands_Animal_Sanctuary-55069496....

If you follow the story of Woodlands Animal Sanctuary you may have seen on their socials the kittens who have recently found their way into their loving arms. In the last few days, they have welcomed 8 new cats into their care.

Martha, who had been found as a stray, living at the bottom of a garden, was heavily pregnant, and was struggling to thrive after fighting to survive the harsh winter living rough. On admittance the team were very concerned about her, due to her laboured breathing. Although heavily pregnant, she clung onto her babies an extra couple of days, the team suspect, due to the stress of her change in environments. She has now however, given birth to 5 beautiful, apparently healthy kittens. It is now very clear to see, though, just how tough life has been for Martha. With her no longer bearing the weight of her babies, the team are saddened to see just how underweight Martha is. Obviously, a fighter, the team are monitoring both her and her kittens closely to ensure they are thriving as well as possible.

The week then started bright and early, at 7:30 on Monday, when two orphaned kittens, found at a local factory, were rescued in conjunction with Jasper’s Cats. Estimated at being around 3 weeks old, siblings Fred & Whilma are also severely underweight. To give you an idea, Whilma at 3 weeks old, is weighing less that Martha’s newborn kittens! These babies are being closely monitored and hand fed around the clock, every 3 hours, to ensure they receive the right amount of milk that their young bodies need and can tolerate.

Their new goat family are settling in well too, with both kids now feeding really well and the team confident enough with them all, to be planning the weaning process. The vet has been out to them again, but this time, for a routine visit, which saw all the goats getting their feed trimmed and vaccinated.

Woodlands has some further good news to share; when they rescued Ana, Elsa and Olaf, they had to leave behind a further 29 goats. However, in collaboration with quite a few other rescues, Woodlands are pleased to be able to say that homes have now been found for all 29 goats. This is an achievement they are really proud of, and a clear sign of what can be achieved when charities work together. Woodland does not have the capacity to take all 32 goats, they did however, have the drive and dedication to see that all 32 found suitable homes. On 30th April Woodlands will co-ordinate the distribution of the remaining 29 goats to their new homes.

If you would like to support any of the work Woodlands Animal Sanctuary does, you can get all the details from their website: [www.woodlandsanimalsanctuary.org.uk/donate/](www.woodlandsanimalsanctuary.org.uk/donate/)

If you are interested in rehoming one of the adult cats they have in, pop along to their Adoption Evening next Monday 22nd from 3 –7pm at Woodlands’ site in Holmeswood. You can have any questions you may have answered and will be able to meet all the cats they have available for rehoming. There’s no need to book, just pop along from 3pm to meet the team and the cats.

If you would like to support any of the work Woodlands Animal Sanctuary does, you can get all the details from their website: [www.woodlandsanimalsanctuary.org.uk/donate/](http://www.woodlandsanimalsanctuary.org.uk/donate/)

++ INCIDENT 24 ++

22/04/2024 - 0115hrs

Our colleagues in Holyhead’s Rescue Coordination Centre tasked the team after receiving a request from Merseyside Police for assistance in searching for a high risk person at Southport/Marshside.

Our flank team HM Coastguard Crosby were also requested to assist.

While preparing to begin a full search on foot, we were fortunate to have NPAS (Police helicopter) in the area, who flew in and located the casualty within a couple of minutes for us, fairly close to our RV point.

Aided by our friends from Southport Offshore Rescue Trust, two quad bikes, with Police officers onboard were deployed to the casualty, followed a short time later by a third quad bike and trailer with two additional Police officers and two Coastguard officers.

The casualty was brought back to safety, and all assets were stood down.

This was another great example of joint operations.

'What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare.’ WH Davies.
I did stand and stare to get the inspiration for these two paintings. One is set at Ainsdale beach and other near Southport pier.
I've tried to capture the sheer sense of scale one feels when the sky is BIG and the sea has receded.
Just vast, beautiful, awesome space.
